Well done to Globe RC junior member, Isobel Turner, who performed exceptionally well at the National Schools Regatta on Sunday 30th May.
Accompanied by Maurice Coughlin, Head coach with London Youth Rowing she had to pre-qualify in the top 12 from 24 entries from around the country. It was a race against the clock along the multi laned course at the National Water Sports Centre, Nottinghamshire.
“Isobel surpassed my expectations and couldn’t have sculled it better; she gave the performance of her life. Watching from the towpath I had the feeling that if she didn’t qualify with this performance she can go home feeling pride in having given it her best shot. I have not seen Isobel get emotional but when the results came through I think she might have been close to tears of joy, comforted by a hug from mum, she was in the top 12 athletes and qualified for the semi finals.
The wind Gods were not with us and favoured lane 6, Isobel being drawn in lane 1. Needless to say that as the smallest athlete in the field and in the worst lane the result was not going to be the one we wanted. I made adjustments to the boat and blades to give her a better chance but alas, to no avail. She managed to get to the first marker in front of the field before getting blown off course and nearly capsizing. She fell behind as the conditions got the better of her. The finishing order was lane 6, 5, 4,3,2,1 and this was evident throughout the day with all races being won from lanes 5 and 6.
Isobel should be proud of her achievement this weekend and I am delighted to be able to say that if pride is a sin, then I’ll go to hell.”
