• Welcome

    This is the web site of Globe Rowing Club, rowing from Greenwich since 1923. Based at the Trafalgar Rowing Centre close to the heart of historic Greenwich and only minutes from Cutty Sark DLR, Greenwich and Maze Hill train stations, Globe offers competitive as well as recreational rowing and sculling on an exciting and varied stretch of almost 9 miles of the River Thames from Tower Bridge to the Thames Barrier.

Cooperation and “Clubmanship”
The club depends on the goodwill of experienced members to coach novices and make up crews for them to learn in. If you are promised an outing at a specific time, please be there in good time to change and warm up. Remember that one person’s unannounced failure to turn up usually leaves at least three people standing around getting irritated. Whilst learning, you will probably be asked to help out by coxing crews: this is an excellent way to get river experience, and may be the best way to ensure getting a row later.

Further Progress
The traditional route from absolute beginner to Novice (competitive) rower at Globe includes impromptu challenges between crews, Club Races, and matches with other clubs. The Club Races are generally Summer events, held over a variety of courses, with prizes for the winners. Attendance at these races is compulsory for all members, and supporters are welcome. We are keen to have crews competing against other clubs in the Regattas (side-by-side races) that all clubs put on during the Summer. To reach this level you will need to take the sport fairly seriously and to show sufficient commitment to persuade the Club to devote equipment and coaching resources to your crew.

The Club
The aim of the Club is to ensure that everyone enjoys their rowing at whatever level they wish to reach. To make this happen, we need funds to buy equipment and to keep boathouse and clubhouse going. As a member of the Club you do not have many formal obligations, but we are keen that you join in as many Club activities as possible. This may mean helping to run social or fund-raising events, supporting competitive crews, helping to repair equipment, “persuading” your family and friends to buy tickets for Club Races (or other events), or even cleaning the showers and repainting the changing rooms. Some of these activities can be tedious if only a few join in, so we hope that you will make as great a contribution as you can to the Club’s activities outside simply rowing with us.

Objectives

It is stated in the Club Rules that the “aim of the club shall be to support and encourage the sport and recreation of rowing in and around Greenwich.”  This is a broad objective that we endeavour to implement in our activities as a membership enthusiastic about rowing that delights in sharing the experience with others.

We are part of the Amateur Rowing Association’s Project Oarsome Xtra scheme under which we are commited to bringing young people into rowing.  In our development plan for Project Oarsome Xtra our purpose as a club was articulated as follows:

  • Globe Rowing Club, represented by its elected Executive Committee, wishes to make a deliberate and lasting contribution to the sport of rowing and to the lives of the people it serves.
  • Rowing epitomises the experience of collaboration and expression of a collaborative ethos that resonates strongly with people in all walks of private and business life.  Through participation in rowing and all it entails, on and off the water, people are able to find individual challenge and achievement according to their own aspirations and abilities, while learning to share and cooperate with others.
  • Globe will provide an inclusive context for those wishing to row competitively as well as those who wish to enjoy the sport at a recreational level.
  • Globe will seek to sustain and encourage the development of an inclusive social community welcoming rowers, family and friends alike.

We are also entering into a Community Use Agreement with Sport England that sets out these aims:

  • To increase and improve the number and quality of sporting opportunities for participants in rowing;
  • To provide opportunities for local people, particularly low participant groups, to participate in rowing and to develop their skills;
  • Where appropriate to establish the Trafalgar Rowing Centre as a rowing hub in East London to help raise standards of coaching education and training administration, volunteering and performance pathways in London.

and these objectives:

  • To maximise use of the Facilities;
  • To give priority use to (i) opportunities for beginners, for people wishing to improve their rowing skills via programmes of coaching and competition and training for players coaches and officials (ii) specific activities aimed at attracting new participants to rowing from the following:
  1. - 16 and under;

  10. – League and tournament competition;
  11. – Organised club sessions;

Equal Opportunities

This club is committed to ensuring that equity is incorporated across all aspects of its development. In doing so it acknowledges and adopts the following Sport England definition of sports equity:

Sports equity is about fairness in sport, equality of access, recognising inequalities and taking steps to address them. It is about changing the culture and structure of sport to ensure it becomes equally accessible to everyone in society.

The club respects the rights, dignity and worth of every person and will treat everyone equally within the context of their sport, regardless of age, ability, gender, race, ethnicity, religious belief, sexuality or social/economic status.

The club is committed to everyone having the right to enjoy their sport in an environment free from threat of intimidation, harassment and abuse.
