“Once again the juniors did extremely well on the regatta circuit, this time it was Lea Autumn Regatta on Sunday last. We had a depleted squad due to late holidays for some but the remainder made up for the shortage of numbers. All the youngsters are now competing in the next year category J14’s up to J15’s etc, the 1st of September being the change point.

Our WJ15 girls were entered in three events singles, doubles, and a quad, first up was Sophie Pritchard who my scribe records winning by a country mile from Clark of Lea RC to progress through to the semis. Globe’s Bronwynn Redgrave with a bye to the semis convincingly beat another Lea girl to bag her place in the final. Sophie then beat yet another Lea girl to earn her final spot. The all Globe final had our two girls and doubles partners against each other, both determined to win, with no quarter given we saw a splendid race with Sophie triumphant and Bron being first to give her a victory hug.

Globe’s Jack Davidson, rowing up to men’s novice against an Erith rower who was certainly a lot older than Jacko, saw Jack winning the heat easily by four lengths, in the semi final Jack was up against strong opposition from a Weybridge sculler with Jack losing by two lengths.

Undaunted, Jack then continued with the J17 event rowing two years above his normal status unfortunately losing again to another Weybridge rower.

Greg Blanchard our solitary J14 entry sculled an excellent race against a Lea sculler who was twice warned by the umpire for impeding our rower but Greg being a true sportsman said the Lea lad was better on the day despite his disappointment at losing.

Isobel Turner fresh from her success at the club’s master and apprentice races was still in winning mode moving smoothly through to the semi final against her usual doubles partner Naomi Curthoys of Royal docks, Isobel winning well by 2 lengths. The final put Isobel against a Bewl Bridge girl, again Isobel led from start to finish, my scribe recording another country mile win, I think she means easily.

Back to our WJ15 girls this time in doubles, Molly Atkinson paired with Alice Dwyer and Sophie and Bronwynn back together Molly and Alice beating an Ardingley double for a place in the semi final. Sophie and Bronwynn beating another Ardingley crew by 3lengths to move into the semis. The draw had both Globe crews in different semis and rowing against two Lea RC crews expectations were growing of another “all Globe final” at this point but it was not to be, Molly and Alice losing the semi by a short distance and Sophie and Bron by my scribes C.M. verdict. The final saw our Soph and Bron up against the crew who had beaten their club mates but despite the need for revenge they lost to a stronger crew.

Almost the final event of the day was our WJ15 quad of Bron, Sophie, Molly and Alice coxed by Jacko rowing up at WJ16 against a very strong Lea Rowing club crew, this late in the day and after numerous races our girls were all tired but still gave a good account of themselves losing by a short distance to the local girls.

Comments were heard along the towpath about the strength and quality of Globe’s junior squad, comments that had Peter Smith and Maurice Coughlan grinning from ear to ear and telling poachers to keep away.

I must make special mention here of two seniors Mark Jaques and Joe Hollier who took time out of their busy training schedule to come to support and encourage the youngsters and help with boating, thanks to you both.

My thanks also to the backroom staff of mums, dads, grans and granddads loading and unloading, getting teas and the myriad other things that need to be done for the clubs success, in particular my thanks to my scribe and secretary Carole Turner for keeping an up to date list of proceedings that helps me compile my waffle.

Thanks to you all, next week sees the final regatta of the season at Cambridge, once again Peter and Marian have entered a strong Globe contingent so if you are free a ride up the M11 is all it takes to support your club.”

Lots of wins and fun at Peterborough Regatta, Alan Wylie reports;

“This weekend was probably the biggest Globe Junior contingent that we have entered in a single regatta and all of the youngsters certainly did the club proud with their rowing ability, the team spirit they show in helping and supporting each other plus the sportsman like manner in which they behave with competitors.

Our winners were;

Isobel Turner in both the 1000m and 500m WJ16 1X events.

James French in both the 1000m and 500m J15 1X events.

Sophie Pritchard in the WJ14 1X

Sophie Pritchard and Bronwynn Redgrave in the WJ14 2X.

Listing wins is easy but the strength in depth that we have in the juniors should not be ignored James in winning had to best three of his club mates Jack Davidson, Alex Scott-Malden and Rupert Wood. All four lined up against local opposition in the doubles Jack & James with Rupert & Alex although progressing to the final did not manage the win.

Our J13 and J12 Greg Blanchard and Will French both rowed up as there was no category at their age group but none the less gave good account of their selves Will losing in the heat with Greg first in the heat and second place in the final, some splendid sculling from these two young men.

Elise French rowed in both the W Nov 1X event and the WJ16 1X race, the novice event saw Elise, who has not been sculling very long give a terrific account of herself against much older and more experienced ladies. She also sculled well to follow Isobel in for a Globe one-two in WJ161X.

Our other juniors that failed to pick up any silverware but all gave their all in their events were Sorcha Liston-Smith, Alice Dwyer and Alicia Buckley, Molly Atkinson who missed the entry deadline and was not rowing also did wonders in supporting her club mates.

Finally I would like to give special thanks to the parents, who in the absence of Peter Smith rallied round with mums organizing boating times, boat numbers, timings plus teas and grub and then instructing dads, when boats were no longer needed, de-rig and get the boats on the trailer and tied down.

A splendid weekends sport in great company. I saw signs of good old fashioned Globe spirit. Thank you every one.”

Alan Wylie, club president, reports from St. Neots;

“A large contingent of both juniors and seniors competed at St Neots at the weekend and produced some very fine rowing with many of our juniors progressing through to the semis and finals unfortunately not collecting any silverware but certainly putting up some great performances.

Three youngsters that perhaps deserve a special mention are Will French who not only gave a great performance in the final of the J12 sculls but also helped out Nigel Le Gassick now rowing for Mortlake Anglian as cox’un for their 4+. Will’s sister Elise sculling in her first regatta did very well in both the WJ16 and novice W1x events.

The latest addition to the Junior squad Bronwyn Redgrave sculled very well in the WJ14 1x .In WJ14 2x with Sophie Pritchard when in the lead they unfortunately strayed out of the racing lane and had to stop rowing but a terrific show for Bron’s first outing in Globe colours. Once again young Jack Davidson gave his all, progressing thru’ numerous heats before being pipped in the final. Jack also doubled with James French but unfortunately did not progress past the heats.

The seniors did very well with two mixed doubles in the same event Vicky and Michael Axton against Alex Johnson and Joe Hollier both doubles sculled well but we were denied an all Globe final. The quad of Joe, Mark Jacques, Will Laughlin and Michael Axton put up a great fight but were beaten in the heats by a short margin, Sunday saw Joe Regan sit in for Mark who was not available but the quad did not progress beyond the heats. Richard Vidal and his crewmate Richard Feeney sculled well in the masters B/C double sculls but were defeated by a short head

The hopes of some silverware now rested on our seniors Will Laughlin and Vicky Axton, both sculling in the singles events, Will missed out on a pot but Vicky after four heats and a final produced some splendid sculling to collect the laurels.

I almost forgot to mention Peter Rouse who sculled under the Globe banner progressed through the heats but lost in the final.

All in all a very enjoyable weekend my thanks to all the members for a great weekend and special thanks to the parents and friends who help with the logistics of organizing 13 boats and the rest of the gear needed for our athletes.”

Twelve people took up our 10 week Beginners Course in the Spring and have now completed the course. The highlight of which was their first taste of club racing on Sunday. A lovely day with great conditions saw two heats of coxed fours racing approx 750m along the south shore of the Thames at Greenwich. Many thanks to Carol Kenna, Alan Mansfield and all those members who helped out with outings, tank and gym sessions, plus the capsize and swimming tests. All this made a very successful course. Photos of Sundays racing can be found on FlickR or Facebook.

Congratulations to all participants and well done to Vicky Adnitt (Bow), Rupert Tulloch (2), Arno Selbman (3), Ali Rana (stroke) and Richard Vidal (cox) for being the winning crew. A great day.

“The first heat saw Sophie against Miss Constantinou, the Burway RC sculler, Sophie took the lead early on and following a close race won by Sophie in the final 200 metres by 2 lengths.

The Qtr final had Sophie against the old enemy Tideway Scullers School represented by Miss Flanagan short shrift here for TSS, Sophie winning by 41/2 lengths having led from start to finish.

In the semi final, Sophie sculled off into the lead only to be impeded by a start bound double skiff on the way to the start, Sophie well in the lead at this point eased off and at one point stopped sculling, whilst the double skiff cleared the course following a berating by the umpire, berating the double not Sophie, who despite the interference sculled on to win, the verdict being easily.

The final had Globe against Holly Lock of Staines BC the two young ladies chatted before boating and wished each other well, on the water was a different story Globe from the start went ahead and held a 2 length lead for the entire course, a perfectly sculled race from Globe’s Sophie Pritchard to collect the “Laurels” and the Pot for a splendid WJ14 sculling event.

Well done Sophie, thank you to the supporting parents and grandparents, and thank you all for a great day’s sport.”

Once again our juniors carried the Globe flag triumphantly at Barnes & Mortlake Regatta at the weekend. Alan Wylie, club President reports;

WJ14 1X The second race of the days events featured Globe’s Sorcha Liston-Smith sculling the first heat of the J14 singles against Putney high School. Sorcha won her heat comfortably by a 2 length margin to go through to the final.

Race three saw Globe’s Sophie Pritchard fresh from her success last week at Peterborough looking to add to her collection this week, Sophie like Sorcha was drawn against a Putney High sculler Sophie sculled in to win by a comfortable 1 length to set up an all Globe final, something not seen often in Globe’s annals in regatta racing.

J15 1X saw our J15 stalwart Jack Davidson competing again, Jack sculled a terrific race to beat the Tiffin School opponent easily for a semi-final place.Next was the turn of James French one of our newer scullers who sculled an extremely good race but lost out in the final stages to the more experienced Tiffin School sculler.

WJ14 4X+ The Quad, Globes flagship crew among the Juniors, This saw the two single scullers Sorcha and Sophie in the boat at cox and three respectively, stroked by Alicia Buckley and with the bow pair of Molly Atkinson and Alice Dwyer. Once again up against a quad from Putney High, it certainly was not Putney’s day, the Globe quartet led from start to finish crossing the line at least three lengths ahead to secure a final place.

J14 2X In this event Globe were represented by two of our J13 scullers Gregory Blanchard and William French “rowing up” as there was no J13 event, rowing against a very confident Kingston RC double Will and Greg lost by about two lengths after a splendid race. These two young men, both very new to the club have great potential and I am sure with more experience will become very accomplished scullers.

J15 1X Semi-final Jack Davidson once again this time avenging James French by beating the Tiffin sculler to stake his place in the final against Poplars Alfie Anderson, Jacks great friend but also his great rival.

J16 2X Saw Jack and James “rowing up” as there was no J15 doubles event unfortunately losing out to Tiffin school after a close fought race.

WJ14 X4+ Final. The tide had turned by this time and the course was reversed this meant that all the watching parents and globies could only see the first 400 metres as the upstream finish is inaccessible.Drawn against a Kingston RC crew who looked extremely apprehensive after watching Globes quartet power away from the boating area. The start saw our girls, ably coxed by Sorcha, take the lead from the off and gradually extend the lead until they were out of sight, the report by phone from the finish by an intrepid parent was a fifteen length win for the Globettes, the official verdict being Globe easily.

WJ14 X1 Final. The most eagerly awaited race of the day by parents, grandparents, young and old Globies plus our near neighbours Poplar, again the tide had turned so the spectators could enjoy the final 500 metres and enjoy they did, everybody screaming encouragement to both Sorcha and Sophie who when they came in sight were neck and neck, Sorcha the more experienced sculler found something and pulled out to a length lead, Sophie the young pretender fought back and closed Sorcha down, rowing through to a half length lead and looked to be going for the kill, in the last 10 metres disaster struck, Sophie, in the lead caught a crab her scream was heard both by the crowd and Sorcha who took full advantage and pinched the win in the last five strokes, a brilliant race by both of these young ladies who are certainly a force to be reckoned with in the WJ14 event. Sophie who was in tears returning to the boating area was immediately hugged by Sorcha and the rest of the girls. All great friends ashore but deadly rivals afloat. A special thank you to both girls for a brilliant race.

J15 1X Final saw Jack Davidson pitted against his friend and rival Poplar’s Alfie Anderson, once again Jack sculled his utmost but sad to say the laurels this time went in Poplar’s direction, Jack deserves a special mention as he always has a terrific zest for the race and always gives one hundred and ten per cent effort.Well done Jacko.

Finally thanks to all the friends and families who come to support the juniors, the help given and the general camaraderie of everyone that makes Globe’s regatta racing a wonderful days sport.
