Sad News – Mrs Jo Milligan passed away.

Jo Milligan mother of Bob has sadly passed away. Bob recalled when his mother first came to the club 1966 when our current club house was a rope store. Jo was an active supporter of Globe for many years. Bob recalled family names such as the Pittmans, Cakebread & Howlett at his mothers time.

The funeral will take place Thursday 13th October at Honor Oak Crem, followed by a celebration of Jo life at Globe Rowing Club – all that know Bob or his mother are welcome.

All Globe members send there deepest sympathy to Bob and his family at this time – Ken Milton (Chairman)

Oxford to Greenwich Rowing Tour

Two Globe senior crews recently finish a 110 mile row from Abingdon to Greenwich. Dubbed at one stage the ‘missing rigger tour’ the rowers had many challengers to overcome, but overcome them they did, and the boats were rowed home on Saturday 13th August.

Thanks goes to Racheal our support driver, who now knows the way to Abingdon like the back of her hand, Alan for his guidance and taking us through London, Louisa and Debs who joined us and a big cheer to all us rowers.

Richard F, Ken, Carol, Elise, Len, Richard V, Murry, Jo, Sara, Seb, David ,Ali, Debs and Louisa.

A few pints and red wine at night certainly helped us through the row.

Globe Success at St Neot’s Regatta

In a mixed bag of weather conditions, Globe juniors enjoyed a successful weekend at St. Neot’s Regatta with several wins amongst some very tough competition.

Results were mixed over Saturday’s 1000m course, with all junior athletes competing in two events, and many progressing through to finals and semi- finals.

Jack Davidson, James French, Sophie Pritchard, Bronwynn Redgrave, Greg Blanchard and Naomi Curthoys, all represented the club well in their respective events and can be very proud of their performances.

Star of the day on Saturday, however, was Elise French who convincingly won her WNov 1X event, thereby leaving behind her novice status. We wish her future success up in the dizzy heights of IM3!

Sunday brought warmer, if a little breezy, weather which tested the club’s gazebos to the limit!

More silverware was to come Globe’s way as Sophie Pritchard sculled magnificently to victory in the WJ15 and WJ16 1X finals and

Naomi Curthoys, following her recent success at the British Rowing Championships, gave an impressive performance ‘rowing up’ in the WJ18 1X event to claim the prize. Congratulations to both girls!

James and Jack fought hard through their single and double sculls events but ‘Lady Luck’ was not on their side and both failed to make finals on this occasion.

Elise French, in her New IM3 status, managed to win a place in the final but was, unfortunately, unable to capitalize for a win.

Two noteworthy performances were those of the quad scull comprised of Naomi, Elise, James and Jack which, despite being formed at late notice and sculling together for the first time on the Saturday evening in a quick practice session, managed to give the opposition a hard race in the Senior category in which they competed. Also, William French, in his second race of the season, sculled brilliantly to win a place in the final of the J13 1X where he lost out to a strong opponent.

A special mention must go to Gregory Blanchard who gave determined performances in both J14 and J15 1x events, progressing masterfully through to both finals where he was unfortunate not to secure a win. Such mature sculling will, without doubt, yield successes in future and we look forward to these.

Congratulations are also due to Maurice and Milky who, as we have come to expect, gave slick performances on both days, bringing home another two ‘pots’ each for their trophy cabinets.

It is wonderful to see the Globe club spirit present at regattas, with club members, coaches, parents and grandparents all helping and supporting the juniors and making the weekend a thoroughly enjoyable one. Thank you to Peter and Marian for all the hard work that you put in and thanks also to Maurice for your tireless dedication to the junior squad. It is very much appreciated.

Medal Success for Globe at British Rowing Nat Championships 2011

Globe juniors and seniors, once again, put in some impressive performances at the British Rowing Championships which took place at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham last weekend.

Senior Rowers - ‘Joe Hollier and Mark Jaques competed in senior sculling events sculling well and progressed to semi-finals eventually being beaten by strong opposition. They have also had a very good season representing the club in top regattas’, Congratulations to them both.

Juniors Squad -Amid strong competition, Sophie Pritchard (WJ15 1X), Alice Dwyer and Sorcha Liston-Smith (WJ152X), Jack Davidson and James French (J162X) and Isobel Turner and Sophie Baggs (WJ2X) all battled hard through qualifiers but, unfortunately, failed to progress further on this occasion.

Gregory Blanchard sculled convincingly through heats to win a place in the final of the J141X event, finishing in 4^th place overall. This is a fantastic achievement for young Gregory and we look forward to seeing his progress over the coming months and years.

Sunday saw Globe clubmates, Naomi Curthoys and Elise French, once again, up against each other in the final of the WJ17 single sculls event.

In a difficult head wind, the race was dominated from early on by a strong Cambois sculler, followed by a young lady from Broxbourne Rowing Club.

The Globe supporters could be heard from afar, loudly cheering on both girls, in what was a very exciting race. Many congratulations to Naomi for such a fine performance.

Thanks must go to Peter and Maurice for their excellent coaching and support of the Globe juniors. These results show that the squad are going from strength to strength and have a depth of talent, commitment and enthusiasm, which promises to yield many more successes in the future. Well done to all the juniors!

2011 Dogget’s Coat & Badge Race 15th July
